Introduction

You’re wondering how to lose excess weight and how to keep it off permanently. You’re frustrated by years of weight loss failure and continued weight gain. You probably weigh more now than you ever have in your life. You’re out of control of your weight and of your eating.

You’ve tried to reduce your food portions. You’ve tried to reduce dietary fat. You’ve tried to count calories. You’ve tried going hungry and resisting temptation. And you’ve lost weight for a while, but never for long.

You’re doubly frustrated because, in general, you are very much in control of yourself. You are successful in most areas of your life: school, work, household management, and family. Your willpower hasn’t been especially weak in these other areas, so why in this one particular area of life are you not successful? It can’t simply be your unique personal defect; after all, 70% of Americans are in this same situation: trapped by ever-increasing overweight.

No, it’s not your unique defect, and it has little to do with your willpower. Rather, you and millions of other Americans have failed at permanent weight loss because you have not had the necessary knowledge and tools to succeed.

It’s as if you’ve been trying to turn a screw with a hammer, or trying to cut a board with a wrench—you’ve had the wrong tools for the job. With the wrong tools, all the good intentions and willpower in the world won’t help you succeed.

Since 1998 I’ve treated over 2000 patients who have been as frustrated as you are about their weight. I’ve put them on a program, and given them the tools, that lead to major, permanent weight loss. With the right knowledge and the right tools, my patients are able to succeed at permanent weight loss.

Here are letters from just two of my many successful weight-loss patients:

From: Ruth Ann Borchert (retiree), Bella Vista, AR

“I have ‘worried’ with my weight for years. Finally, my boss convinced me to try Dr. Tate. She and I teamed up to see Dr. Tate on your ‘buddy’ plan and started our counseling with Dr. Tate last April 14th.

“After our first visit I think we both knew this program was going to work for us! We both had thought Dr. Tate might be a ‘quack’ and only in it for the money but we found him to be attentive and caring about our feelings and questions. We never have felt rushed in an office visit. He has a great chair-side manner!

“I have continued to lose weight each month. The first month was 18 pounds and about 12 inches, from what I remember. I usually lose 5-8 pounds a month and so far have lost 60 pounds.

“It has been painless also. The foods you eat are satisfying and there are many foods on the market now to help you stay on a low-carb program. I love to travel and eating while away from home has not been a big problem on this program. The month we went on a cruise I still lost weight!

“Now I love to try on clothes. And the compliments I have had on my new look have been so much fun! My husband is very proud of me. All of this has encouraged him and my daughter to go on the low-carb plan too. He has lost 35 lbs and my daughter has lost 45 pounds.

“I truly believe this is a plan I can live with for the rest of my life.”

From: Kathy Hanlon (teacher), Rogers Public Schools, Rogers, AR

“I can say in all honesty that I have been absolutely delighted with the weight loss program and services offered by Tate Health Care. I was very skeptical before I started. I have been on every program, diet etc… there is. I have lost over 100 pounds on a famous program only to gain it right back.

“The solutions offered at Tate are easy and they work. Not only am I losing weight, but I feel confident that I will be able to maintain the weight loss. The program (I hate to call it that) is so much a part of my everyday life that it requires little conscious effort on my part anymore.”

You can have the same kind of results that these two patients are enjoying. This book will tell you how.

Until 1998 I was in the same situation that you’re in: repetitive dieting and yet ever-increasing weight. Overweight, diabetes and high blood pressure run in my family, so I knew that I had to find a way to keep extra pounds off.

That’s when I began researching the scientific journals on the causes and treatments of overweight. I went to weight-loss specialists’ medical conferences and talked with physicians who have treated overweight for decades. In this way, I learned the real causes of overweight and the truly effective treatments. What I learned shocked me. Truly knowledgeable medical recommendations about treating overweight were almost exactly the opposite of what most doctors (and the public) are taught.

I first tried these new weight loss techniques on myself with great results immediately. I was eating more, exercising less, and getting thinner! Then, I began treating overweight patients in my office with these techniques, again with great results. Since then, I’ve treated thousands of overweight patients with success. I continue to spend a great deal of time keeping up with the latest developments in medical weight loss knowledge.

Currently, most of my overweight patients lose about 15% of their initial body weight in the first four months. After that initial weight loss, my patients typically lose five to eight pounds per month, down to a healthy weight—with no hunger problems. (Many of my patients have lost 100 pounds in the first nine to 12 months—that’s about as quickly as with stomach surgery!) You can achieve weight loss results like these, too.

I’ve put what I’ve learned from study and experience into this book. From this book you’ll learn the latest medical information about the causes and treatments of overeating and overweight.

We’ll start with important background information. Overweight is not the unimportant—even laughable—problem that so many of us (even physicians) make it out to be. Overweight causes serious medical, psychological, and social problems. You need to know about the complications of overweight so you can stop them from damaging your life.

There are many misunderstandings about the causes and treatments of overweight, and we’ll describe the most common misunderstandings. You’ll hear these wrong ideas from well-meaning friends, family, and physicians; you need to have a good understanding of them so that you’re not led astray from what really works.

We’ll discuss how carbohydrates, in particular, cause excess body fat storage. We’ll also discuss why cravings for carbohydrates are so irresistible for most of us.

We’ll talk about how daily stress leads to increased body fat both by increasing carb cravings and by causing hormone problems. We’ll discuss the role of depression in causing, and being caused by, overweight.

Overweight tends to run in families, and we’ll discuss what science knows about the genetics of overweight, and the role of early childhood development in overweight. We’ll also discuss how our modern Western society promotes the development of overweight.

Physicians have not been of much help in treating overweight. We’ll discuss why this is so, and how you can find a physician who will actually help you lose weight forever. I’ll describe the information I need when meeting with an overweight patient for the first time, and how health histories can affect treatment planning. I’ll describe the general principles of weight loss treatment that I, and other specialist physicians, use.

I’ll discuss medications for controlling appetite and promoting weight loss. There are lots of myths and misinformation about these medications and you need to know the truth about them so that you’re able to use the best tools to lose weight forever.

Then, I’ll describe the low-carb nutrition plan that my patients and I follow with great success. We’ve had almost no weight-loss failures on this diet. We’ve had no adverse health effects from this diet. Patients like it and feel that they can easily stay on it the rest of their lives.

There has been much misinformation about the best way to exercise. We’ve been taught that aerobic exercise is best for heart, lungs and weight control. But we’re learning differently, and the new facts are good news. Less time needs to be devoted to exercise than we’ve been advised in the past.

I’ll say a bit about treating overweight diabetic patients. Much of the traditional treatment of diabetes actually worsens diabetes and overweight. We have a better way of treatment now.

Finally, I’ll discuss how to find the best physician to help you lose weight—or how to educate and work with your family physician.

If you learn everything in this book, you’ll know more than 99% of physicians about overweight and its treatment. You’ll be in a good position to lose your excess body fat forever. So open your mind to new ideas and prepare to learn!
