Dr. Tate is a physician, board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He specializes in the treatment of Overweight and Obesity. He is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, which is the primary US physician organization devoted to the medical treatment of Overweight. He is also a member of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, the primary US scientific organization devoted to researching the causes and treatments of overweight. He is a member of the Nutrition and Metabolism Society, the primary research organization on low-carbohydrate nutrition.
Dr. Tate graduated from Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1979. He then completed his residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals. His final year of residency he was named Chief Resident in recognition of his clinical and administrative skills.
After completing his residency, Dr. Tate moved to Houston, Texas, where he completed a course of study in psychoanalysis, including his own 5-year personal psychoanalysis, and was graduated from the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute. He is certified in psychoanalysis by the American Psychoanalytic Association.
In Houston, he also served as clinical assistant professor at the Baylor University School of Medicine, and as assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical School. He also taught at the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute. In addiction, Dr. Tate maintained an active private practice for the ten years he lived in Houston.
Since 1993 Dr. Tate has lived with his family in northwest Arkansas, home to the headquarters of several national corporations, as well as the University of Arkansas. In this beautiful, peaceful, prosperous area he maintains a busy medical practice, and has served as clinical assistant professor at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine.
Since 1998 Dr. Tate has treated over 2400 patients for overeating and overweight.
Dr. Tate is well known as a medical teacher to lay audiences. He explains complex medical conditions in a way that is easy to understand. Educating the public about health is one of his key professional goals.
Ellen, Dr. Tate’s wife since 1974, is a teacher. They have two adult children, Andrew and Elizabeth.
